Solid wood furniture is valued first by the quality of the wood from which it is made, and the wood is valued by the tree from which it is taken. Only healthy and mature trees are used to create Richelieu pieces. Richelieu furniture is made of solid cherry ; the back, shelves and drawers are made of hash or solid chestnut, which has the inherent ability to fight off all insects.

True mortise and tenon assembly, traditional dove tail drawers and "queue de billard" panels reveal several aspects ofauthentic antique construction. Master sculptors hand-carve the ornamental motifs and molding on each piece and thus, each piece has its own paticular unique style and feeling.

Richelieu pieces are aged and finished one by one until they possess the same markings and characteristics as their predecessors. Seventeen separate operations are necessary to reach the desired results : disjointed planks, wormholes, and distress markings along with true beeswax, all add to the authenticity of the pieces.
